The biggest decision

Medicare Advantage and Medigap,
in plain English.

These two work very differently. Understanding the difference is most of the work.

Neither one is better in general. They simply suit different people.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

A private plan that takes the place of Original Medicare and bundles your coverage into one plan.

  • Often combines your Medicare coverage into a single plan
  • Lower monthly cost, but you pay more as you use care
  • You generally stay within the plan's network of doctors
  • Costs and benefits can change from year to year

Often fits people who want lower monthly costs and don't mind using a network.

Supplement

Medigap

Works alongside Original Medicare and helps cover the share Medicare doesn't pay.

  • See nearly any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare
  • Higher monthly cost, but far fewer surprise bills
  • You'll usually add a separate Part D drug plan
  • Benefits are standardised and don't change year to year

Often fits people who travel, see specialists regularly, or value predictable costs.

Not sure which side you fall on? Most people aren't, and it depends on details rather than opinion.
