Santee, California
Santee runs along the San Diego River in East County, next to El Cajon and Lakeside. The federal Medicare rules do not change from one city to the next, so nothing on this page is Santee-specific trivia. It is the same plain explanation, written for someone who lives here.
The federal rules are the same everywhere. So the windows set out below are the general ones, and the useful question is which of them applies to you rather than which city you are in.
Your Initial Enrollment Period runs seven months: the three months before the month you turn 65, that month, and the three months after.
Most people start looking about a year out, which is sensible rather than early.
If you already hold a Medigap policy, California gives you sixty days from your birthday each year to move to a different policy with equal or fewer benefits, with no health questions asked.
Most states do not have this. It is worth marking on a calendar every year, not just the year you first enroll.
Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, and any change takes effect January 1. Read your Annual Notice of Change each autumn before that window opens.
A plan's costs and network can change year to year, so a short review each autumn is how people avoid ending up on the wrong plan by default.
If you have had coverage through your own or a spouse's current employer, you generally get an eight-month Special Enrollment Period once that job or coverage ends, whichever happens first.
COBRA does not count as employer coverage for this. The clock starts when the job ends, not when COBRA ends.
Whether your specific doctors and hospitals are in a plan's network matters more than any other single detail. Check this before looking at anything else.
Check whether each plan's drug list covers what you actually take, and confirm it every year, since a drug list can change from one year to the next.
The San Diego County Aging & Independence Services program offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling through California's SHIP program (Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program, HICAP). It covers Santee along with the rest of the county, and it is a reasonable second opinion alongside a conversation with a licensed agent. It costs nothing either way.
If reading about it is not the same as talking about it, a Licensed Insurance Agent based in San Diego County can walk through your own situation on the phone.
Two ways to do this
Or call (619) 382-3810 and speak with a Licensed Insurance Agent, Mon–Fri, 8:30am–5pm PT.
